چکیده
Cardiac arrest is rare in children. Breath-holding, on the other hand, is fairly common. We report a case in which one complicated the other with serious consequences. A review of the literature on the subject was undertaken.

Diverse Presentation of Breath Holding Spells: Two Case Reports with Literature Review
Breath holding spells are a common and dramatic form of syncope and anoxic seizure in infancy. They are usually triggered by an emotional stimuli or minor trauma. Based on the color change, they are classified into 3 types, cyanotic, pallid, and mixed. Pallid breath holding spells result from exaggerated, vagally-mediated cardiac inhibition, whereas the more common, cyanotic breathholding spell...
متن کاملGlycopyrrolate and theophylline for the treatment of severe pallid breath-holding spells.
Severe pallid breath-holding spells (BHSs) are based on parasympathetic hyperactivity, leading to cardiac asystole, pallor, brain ischemia, loss of consciousness, and reflex anoxic seizures. In recent years, an increasing number of patients with severe pallid BHSs have been successfully treated with pacemaker implantation. We present the case of a 13-month-old girl suffering from repeated sever...
متن کاملA Case of Cardiac Arrest after Topical Phenylephrine Administration in Adenoidectomy Surgery
Some otolaryngologists administer topical phenylephrine for bleeding control in adenoidectomy surgery. Absorption of this drug from surgical site can lead to increase in blood pressure due to vasoconstriction and then bradycardia related to baroreceptore reflex. Our case was an intraoperative arrest of a 9-yrs-old girl related to administration of topical phenylephrine during adenoidectomy how...
متن کاملPallid syncope successfully treated by permanent cardiac pacing
The aims of this study are to raise awareness among paediatricians, neurologists and paediatric neurologists of the potential benefits of permanent cardiac pacing in patients who have severe and disabling reflex anoxic seizures (RAS) associated with reflex asystole, sometimes called ‘pallid syncope’. Up to now pacing was generally held not to be required for RAS as it is self-limiting and safe....
متن کاملCase report of successful treatment of pallid breath-holding spells with glycopyrrolate.
Breath-holding spells are a common childhood disorder that typically present before 12 months of age. Whereas most cases are benign, some patients have very severe cases associated with bradycardia that can progress from asystole to syncope and seizures. Treatment studies have implicated the use of several therapies, such as oral iron, fluoxetine, and pacemaker implantation. This is a retrospec...
